Big Horn Wind Power Project
The Big Horn Wind Power Project is a 200 megawatt (MW) wind farm located near Bickleton, Washington in Klickitat County.
While the entire project spans approximately 15,000 acres, the actual footprint of the turbines and associated facilities uses approximately two percent of the total habitat within leased land. Landowners continue using the remainder of the land for wheat farming and grazing. In addition, PPM Energy invested in conserving 455 acres of habitat on the south side of the site.
Bickleton, known as the "Bluebird Capital of the World" because of the thousands of birds that nest in the region, got a boost from PPM Energy's sponsorship of the high school shop class. Students built about 250 bluebird boxes ready-made for the needs of thousands of migratory birds. The boxes are part of a larger network of 2,000 bluebird homes in existence since the 1960s.
